Jen's Therapeutic Style

Hi! I'm Jen Whitlock. If the only therapist you have ever seen is Jennifer Melfi, fuggetaboutit. I share the first name with the Sopranos psychologist, but I don't share the distant "blank slate" approach.

Instead of putting on a cold professional "facade," I prefer to cultivate a friendly, accepting atmosphere where clients feel free to be themselves. Laughter can be a part of the sessions, as seeing the humor in tough situations can be therapeutic.

I have more than 20 years experience helping adults and teens get past whatever is getting in the way of a more authentic and vibrant life. You want theories? I integrate techniques of Humanistic Psychology, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Play Therapy, Psychodrama, Gestalt and Internal Family Systems - whatever suits my clients' needs.

As you can tell by the name of my joint, creativity is crucial to me. I am a Writer, a Comic Actor, a Costume Creator and the Queen of the Big Easy Easton Brass Band. You may see me marching around the neighborhood in a feather headdress or an Ursula costume. This is not they teach in dress for success trainings, but this is my brand of authentic.

Let me help you express your true colors.

My Specialties

I have a soft spot for nonconformists: Teens with blue hair; Artists; Free Spirits. Individuals who are quirky, unique and creative. While self expression is enlivening, it can perplex conformists, and create loneliness and doubt until one develops confidence and finds kindred spirits.

I have a knack for talking to teens. That's because I'm fun to talk to and I really listen and understand. I have helped adolescents tackle such problems as attitudes, anxiety, sexual relationships and peer conflict. I presented my expertise on "How to Engage the Difficult Teen" at a New Jersey Counseling Association Conference.

I also specialize in treating bipolar disorder. I have given lectures on the topic, and I was the Professional Advisor for DBSA (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance) Succasunna for four years. Here's an introduction to how I treat bipolar disorder.

I welcome the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning population. Homosexuality is not a problem that must be cured, but there are challenges unique to people outside the mainstream. I can help people come out to loved ones, deal with harassment or merely discuss relationships without having to change the pronoun.

I have special knowledge of transgender issues, as I have worked with the population for more than 10 years, and I have presented workshops on gender issues at such venues as Columbia University, Vernon High School, the New Jersey Counseling Association, the Mazzoni Center's Philadelphia TransHealth Conference, Gender Conference East and others. I can write letters for hormone therapy or surgery, if appropriate.

I have extensive training in expressive therapies such as play therapy and psychodrama. It can be difficult to put certain feelings into words. Writing, art, music and role playing can communicate the unspeakable.

I invite you to Create a Live Worth Living.
